Galangal

Galangal can be sliced and used to flavor soups and stews (don't forget to get the pieces out before serving it) or do what I do, just mix the Galangal together with other spices like garlic, ginger, red pepper and unions so you'll get a thick fresh spice-paste! It's really great for just anything! Grill your boring veggies with a spoon of this paste add a shot of soya sauce and you're DONEI love to use this little fella for cooking but who would have thought that Galangal is commonly prescribed today by homeopaths, veterinarians, and other
health care professionals and natural healers. It has been found effective as a remedy for ailments and conditions like indigestion, stomach complaints, colds, flu, fevers, bad breath, seasickness and motion sickness, including nausea, ulcers and inflammation of the stomach, rheumatism, dementia, diarrhea, poor blood circulation, especially in hands and feet and even tumors (anti-tumor effect has been observed in mice). This is like a medicine but then one that taste fantastic! Well I think reason enough to add this spice to your cooking eh?! You can buy Galangal at any Asian Supermarket. I went to 'Dun Yong', I bought 3 pieces for 1,25 Euro!

Mini Tree

Outside of helping reduce your chances of getting cancer, broccoli has other basic functions, too. The phytonutrients found in broccoli also work as antioxidants within the body. They attack free radicals in the body. But they also work harder to help cleanse the body of any other harmful compounds that may be floating around in your body. The sulforaphane found in broccoli also helps support the health of your stomach by limiting your chance of having an ulcer.
And, as if all of that wasn't enough, broccoli can provide help for any parts of your skin that have been damaged by the sun, reduce your chance of getting heart disease, prevent cataracts in your eyes and build stronger bones throughout your body. It even helps pregnant women by helping to prevent certain birth defects. You're crazy to say 'No' to a portion of broccoli. I will post some nice broccoli recipes soon, so your portion of 'little trees' will be even something to look forward to!

Pomegranate Bomb

Like many fruits, pomegranate supplies a healthy dose of vitamin C. Unlike others, it also contains vitamins B5, B9, K. Potassium and zinc top the list of vital minerals that pomegranates and pomegranate juice contain. Better known by its full name, pantothenic acid, vitamin B5 is essential to healthy glowing skin and nerve function. Pantothenic acid will make your hair shine and strong. Research into the importance of pantothenic acid is ongoing, but this micronutrient may help prevent muscle cramping, insulin resistance and adrenal insufficiency! Try to drink some freshly squeezed pomegranate juice after a workout, like I do!
Vitamin B9 is good to repair DNA and create healthy blood cells. A single serving of pomegranate seeds contains 10 percent of an adult’s recommended allowance of the vitamin.
People who don’t get enough vitamin K may bruise easily and run a greater risk of developing osteoporosis. Usually found in dark green leafy vegetables, vitamin K becomes more palatable when it’s packaged in sweet pomegranate seeds.

Nutty Walnuts

I just LOVE walnuts, they add a flavorful crunch to just about anything! Besides the great taste of walnuts they are also very good for you. They are very high in unsaturated fatty acids, iron, vitamin E and B.
If you just look at the walnut itself they kinda look like 'mini-brains' don't you think? Well guess what?! Since there’s a high concentration of omega-3 fatty acids in walnuts, they’re perfect to keep your brains smart & healthy! And the vitamin E will help you to have a healthy glowing skin.
So look sexy while inventing the new Iphone-6 ? ok.. maybe not.. oh you know what I mean.. ;)
But remember, don't go to crazy with the nuts, as they're very high in calories! So moderation is the key!
What are you waiting for? Go get your portion of walnuts!

Cabbage

As mentioned, cabbage is rich in vitamin C, an important antioxidant that helps fight various bacterial and viral infections such as the common cold, ear infections, and bronchitis.
Cabbage also helps control high blood pressure and reduces cholesterol.
Cabbage is an excellent home remedy for obesity - it contains a chemical called tartaric acid which inhibits the conversion of sugars and other carbohydrate into fat. A simple but effective remedy for weight-loss would be to include cabbage into your diet.
Raw cabbage juice is considered to be very healthy. Studies show that drinking a lot of cabbage juice daily can also help heal ulcers. Cabbage contains the amino acid L-glutamine, which protects the stomach lining.
Recent studies have shown that cabbage also lowers the risk of many types of cancer, such as prostate, breast, lung, bladder, and ovarian cancer. How I get my portion of cabbage? I just love to make crispy cabbage chips, it's so delish I'm not even aware that I'm eating something that's super healthy! Check out my Recipe of how to make your own cabbage chips.

Bananas for Bananas

First things first..NEVER..and then I really mean NEVER..make eye-contact while eating a banana!
So your safe now.. where was I .. oh yeah.. things you probably don't know about the beautiful yellow coloured fruit. I love to workout but when I'm busy I sometimes just can't find the time to eat between time, I then like to grab a banana, because bananas consist mainly sugars (glucose, fructose and sucrose) and fiber that makes them ideal for an immediate and slightly prolonged source of energy. Some people say that eating bananas will make you fat..those are the same people who'll say that watching to pie makes them fat too.. ;) trust me a banana a day won't make you fat!
Also bananas contain vitamin B6 and tryptophan, a type of protein that your body converts into serotonin....sero what?! well something that makes you feel relaxed and happy! Flowers are so last season.. so next time you want to cheer someone up give them a bunch of bananas.. very 2013 ;)

Ginger Rocks..(that includes the Redheads!!)

Ginger..Ginger...GINGER.. I just love to pronounce the word Ginger! it sound's like ..I don't know..I just love it! haha! But especially what 'good' it does to your body.. Besides my fascination of the name I really can't imagine my food lifestyle without ginger. It's one of those things I always have in my kitchencabinets. It's really healthy and what most of you probably don't know is that it works as a natural painkiller. As I don't like to take medicines whenever I have a headache or when I feel noxious, I always try to medicate myself first with my own 100% natural medicine: pour some boiled water with some fresh slices of ginger in a big mug, drink this and wait for at least half an hour, if this doesn't work and the pain is unbearable I will take an aspirin, but really.. 99% of the time when I take this ginger tea the pain just slips away! It's also a good remedy if you have a lot of slime down your throat caused by a bad cough or a cold, the tea will dissolve the slime in a natural way. Oh and not to forget.. I use ginger in a big variety of dishes. It always lifts up a dish in no time! And 1 more tip, go to the Asian 'toko' (supermarket) the ginger is there 1/4 of the price you'll pay in your Dutch Supermarket...So now you get why I think that Ginger Rocks!
Sexy Oyster

Oh I just LOVE the taste of oysters, raw, smoked or steamed it doesn't matter, the variety of things you can do with such a small product straight from the ocean is just amazing, not even to mention the great taste of it self in pure form.
Some people don't like the structure of an oyster or they think it tastes like the sea, well that's just the part I personally love about the oyster, it reminds me of summer, and what's not to like about summer?
To fulfil my 'steamed oyster cravings' I always like to go to 'Nam Kee' they serve these to die for steamed oysters. What you also might not know is what the oyster can do when it comes to your cravings in the bedroom, yes people.. they say it works like an aphrodisiac! So goodbye sea star, and hello nympho!

Big Pimpin Pumpkin

Most of you probably think that eating pumpkin won't do your waistline any good, non of this is true. The pumpkin is a very healthy vegetable, even if you want to loose some extra pounds. Besides the reason that I just love the sweet taste of pumpkin there's another reason why i try to eat it as much as possible when it's pumpkin season. I always have to watch my diet as my skin is very sensitive for getting pimples, the high amount of Vitamin A, C and E as well as Zinc present in pumpkin, make it a great choice for those who want a healthy and glowing skin. Have a cup of pumpkin seeds a day to prevent wrinkles and to keep your skin hydrated and nourished. I will post some great pumpkin recipes soon!
Zesty Lemons

Did you know that Lemons are in the top 5 of most healthy fruits, nowadays everybody knows that lemon juice combined with hot water activates your metabolism to loose weight, but what most people don't know is that drinking lemon juice can improve the youthfulness and look of your skin. Lemon and hot water aid the anti-aging process and help clear wrinkles and blackheads from the skin. The vitamin C contained in the lemon rejuvenates the skin from within your body. Knowing all these facts I still tend to forget drinking lemon juice all the time, how I try to get my portion of lemon juice? I always ask for 2 slices of lemon in any drink whenever I'm out. My sparkling water, ginger-ale and tomatojuice taste so much better WITH the lemon added! Besides that it also looks really nice. Don't forget to ask for a straw as the lemon juice is very bad for you teeth. Another idea if you have your friends coming over, I like to use a big glass can filled with water, add with some lemon slices in and some mint leaves.. this looks great on the table and very refreshing at the same time! If you like it to be even more healthier you can make some japanese green tea, cool it of in the fridge, and add the lemons and mint in and there you go.. you're own ice tea, there's no need to add sugar, my opinion.
Shitty Brussels-Sprouts

Shitty Brussels-Sprouts, well that's my first thought when I think of this particular vegetable..why? because all my Dutch classmates in primary school always answered with the same answer that the number one hated food on the planet are Brussels-sprouts with a capital B. The funny thing was that my parents never made my sister and I to eat sprouts, they probably never bought it because they just didn't know what to do with them. My curiosity was making me convincing my mom to make us a dish with brussels-sprouts in, I wanted to know why my classmates disliked them so much. I don't recall what kind of dish my mom exactly made with those sprouts.. but I do remember that my sister and I looked at each other eating our first bite from the brussels- sprout and we laughed cause we did like it. Until this day I'm still not sure what the traditional way of preparing sprouts is in a Dutch dish, but I sometimes mash them up with pumpkin, the colours look so vibrant, the orange against the green, a bit of lemon olive oil, some coriander seeds, cumin, salt and pepper, served with a grilled piece of salmon and your done. Not even to mention the healthy nutricients you'll get from eating them, it's full of vitamin K, C, calcium and iron. I will post some pictures and recipes soon with this beautiful winter veggie. Don't hate them.. love them.
Nutty Coconuts

Oke if there's one thing I'm addicted to it's coconuts! I love them in really anything! Coconut milk for making curry's, coconut-water to drink while I'm working out, coco crisps in desert.. and last but nog least.. coconut oil. The oil I started to use for 6 months now, I was doing my grocery shopping at my local asian supermarket 'Dun Yong' and I was looking for some cans of coconut-milk, and then I suddenly saw this jar which says: coconut oil for cooking.. flabbergasted as I was I picked it up and began to read the description to find out for what use it was. I never got back using my healthy rice-oil I'm just so addicted of using this instead, there's no coconut taste when you use the oil, that's what most people are afraid they think your food will take over all the coconut flavour but non of this is true! The oil is not only good for using in the kitchen but you can use the oil even on your skin and hair, it will make your skin feel soft and loose the cracks from dehydration and makes your hair looks sleek and shiny. I hear you thinking..what about olive oil? well I only use olive oil for salads and dressings, I don't like to heat up my olive oil as all the good stuff will absolve exposing to high temperatures.
Mango Bangles

One of my favourite fruits is the delicious juicy mango, I almost eat them everyday..I always massage my mango before I eat them, so the juice is spread around all the beautiful bright yellow flesh...(I'm actually drewling right now in front of my laptop). Besides of it's delicious taste, the mango has a lot of vitamins and it's full with iron. I'm not a rally big meat eater so I try to get my share of iron by eating a lot of mango's.
I use the skin of the mango to place over my freshly washed face to help my skin prevent of getting pimples because besides the lovely taste of this fruit it's also full of vitamin E which helps to nourish your skin and prevent getting wrinkles and pimples..So to stay gorgeous this is one of my regimes. And now the other fact most of you don't know is that the high level of vitamin E also helps to regulate sex hormones and boosts your sex drive. So now you know the reason of when you see a couple drinking that mango juice so eager..
I'll post some great mango recipes soon, one of them is the grilled chicken with slices of mango topped of with some garlic sesame seeds (my fathers own invented recipe!)

Tasty Tomatoes

Tomatoes.. a fruit or vegetable? This is a never ending discussion, I think their both, I can eat them raw and they can be so full of sweet taste and they're also lovely to cook with too. Most veggies are known for loosing a lot of their vitamins if you cook them, but the great thing about tomatoes is that the bio availability of the lycopene will increase while cooking them.
It takes as little as 540 milliliters of liquid tomato product to get the full benefits of Lycopene. This means that a daily glass of tomato juice has the potential to keep a person looking sexy and feeling healthy. A lot of cancers such as prostate cancer, cervical cancer, colon cancer and rectal cancer just to name a few have all been proven to be staved off by high levels of Lycopene.
How I try to get my portion lycopene?! As I love to lead a healthy life but I love to have some drinks too, I like to order the bloody Mary.. This whole lycopene story is always my excuse of ordering another one..and another one.. and what the hack..another one! Cheers on that people! Look up my recipe for tasty easy to make tomato soup!

Weed from the Sea

When most of you think of seaweed the only dish you'll probably come up with is sushi.. But for me growing up with a strong Asian background it was very normal to eat seaweed chips or crispy seaweed as a snack. You can get all those delicious snacks in most of the Asian supermarkets.
I always like to go to Dun Yong, where I buy my seaweed chips with tom ka kai flavour! it's salty, a bit spicy and you'll taste a hint of lemongrass in as well! I also love to make my own Seaweed salad, it's so easy, very refreshing and goes really well with 'Agadashi', a really delicious Japanese tofu dish! The seaweed salad served in most of the Japanese restaurants here in Amsterdam is a seaweed salad straight from the freezer, so it's not fresh and with loads of sugar in..Only the Okura's Japanese restaurant 'Yamazato' is the only place I've been in where they serve really delicious freshly made seaweed salad.
Besides that it's really tasty it's also very healthy for you, it makes your skin glow and they even say that you'll loose weight from eating it.. So what are you waiting for.. Go get your portion of 'weed'!
